For driving instructors and driving schools
Getting Started
What is Drive My Way?
An app for driving instructors, driving schools and their pupils. You run your diary, pupils, messages, payments and progress from your phone, and your pupils get their own app to see their lessons and progress and message you.
What is the Control Centre?
It's Drive My Way on your laptop, tablet or computer, at
web.drivemyway.co.uk. You sign in with the same email and password as the app, and it's the same account and the same information, so anything you do on one shows on the other straight away. Use it for the jobs that are easier on a big screen: your terms, working hours and branding (your logo and driving school name in the pupil app, with Premium), finances and tax, your cars, importing from another app, and, for a driving school, your instructors. Signing up and your subscription are managed there too.
See what's in the Control Centre.
Do my pupils need to pay?
No. The pupil app is always free. You only pay for your own instructor account, and a driving school pays for a seat for each instructor.
How much does it cost?
See
Pricing for the current plans. Solo instructors pay one monthly price; a driving school pays a base price plus a seat for each instructor. Premium is an optional extra, included in your free trial: Learning Videos and Theory & Hazard Perception for your pupils, and your own logo and driving school name in the pupil app.
How does the free trial work?
Your first 30 days are free, with every feature included (Premium too), and you don't need any bank details to sign up. Before your trial ends, choose Basic or Premium and set up your Direct Debit in the Control Centre. Nothing is taken during the trial. If you decide not to carry on, just don't set one up: nothing is ever taken, and the app pauses for you and your pupils when the trial ends.
See how joining works.
Can I cancel?
Yes, any time, from Billing in the Control Centre. You keep access until the end of the time you've already paid for, or the end of your free trial. Any payment that hasn't yet been sent to your bank is cancelled too. Your Direct Debit stays in place until your access ends, so restarting is one click, and then we remove it.
Can I sign up or pay in the app?
No. Signing up, choosing Basic or Premium, setting up your Direct Debit and cancelling are all done in the
Control Centre on the web. The app never takes payments. We'll remind you by notification and email before your free trial ends.
What happens to my data if I stop paying?
Your account is paused, not deleted straight away. You can still sign in to the Control Centre to restart billing or download your finances and pupils. If you never paid (your free trial ended without a Direct Debit), the account is deleted 90 days after the trial ended. If you'd paid before, it's kept for 12 months and then deleted. We always email you at least 30 days before, and you can ask us to delete it sooner.
Do you have a refer-a-friend scheme?
Yes: refer a friend and get 1 month free*. In the Control Centre, Billing shows your own link, code and QR code to share. See the
terms for the details.
*When a driving instructor or driving school signs up with your link and has paid for 3 months, one monthly payment of yours has your base price taken off: £11.99 (£13.99 on Premium) for a solo instructor, or £13.99 (£15.99 on Premium) for a driving school, where extra instructor seats are still charged.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Download Drive My Way from the
App Store or
Google Play. The Control Centre works in any web browser on a laptop, tablet or computer.
Can I switch from another app or a spreadsheet?
Yes, and it only takes a few minutes. Export your pupils and your income and expenses as CSV files, then import them in the Control Centre. Columns are matched for you, anything that doesn't match a category is asked about once, and nothing is added twice. Stuck?

Running Your Business
I run a driving school. Does it work for my team?
Yes. Invite instructors by email and add seats as you grow. New pupils wait until you choose their instructor, you can book lessons straight into an instructor's diary (unless they lock it), take payments for any pupil, record what you pay instructors and track weekly franchise fees. Trainee instructors are free while they train.
Does it help with my tax?
Finances works out roughly what to put aside for income tax and National Insurance, or Corporation Tax for a limited company. Every expense lines up with HMRC's headings, each quarter's figures are set out ready for your accountant or your Making Tax Digital software, and one click downloads everything for your accountant, with your receipts. Drive My Way doesn't send anything to HMRC itself.
Does it work with Making Tax Digital?
From April 2027, sole traders with turnover over £30,000 have to keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates (
check if it applies to you). Drive My Way keeps your income and expenses digitally, under the right HMRC headings, and works out your quarterly running totals. One click downloads them for HMRC-recognised bridging software such as
My Tax Digital, which sends them to HMRC, or you can pass them to your accountant. Drive My Way doesn't send anything to HMRC itself, and isn't connected with My Tax Digital.
Can it help with my car's costs and reminders?
Yes. Add your car once with its finance, insurance, car tax and MOT. It keeps a record of your finance agreement and the payments you've made, adds each payment to your expenses on the day it leaves your bank, and reminds you before your MOT, car tax or insurance is due.
Can I pick a pupil up somewhere other than home?
Yes. When you book a lesson in the app, choose Home, School, Work or Other. The maps button for that lesson (Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps) and "On the way" go to that address, and each new booking starts from home unless you choose otherwise. Saved addresses are there to pick next time, and pupils can add their own in the app.
Can I see when my pupils are free when I'm booking lessons?
Yes. Pupils tick their free times in their app. On your diary, tap Pupils Availability and choose up to 4 pupils to see their free times in colour, or in the Control Centre use All pupils for a list of everyone not booked this week, with pupils on holiday listed down the other side.
Can I help pupils book their driving test around my other tests?
Yes, if you want to. In Settings, under Booking your driving test, you can choose to show pupils your personal reference number, which DVSA asks for when they book, and the times you can't do a test. Those times are your other booked tests with a travel time either side (a standard gap you choose, which you can make bigger for a single test) and, if you like, your holidays and the times of your appointments. Pupils see it in their app under Resources, with a link to
book their practical test on GOV.UK. It's all off until you switch it on, it never shows anything about your other pupils, and it doesn't add anything to your diary.
Can I give my pupils mock tests?
Yes. Mark a practice mock test on a DVSA-style marking sheet: fill it in on paper during the drive, then type it in once you're parked with the engine off. You can print a blank or filled-in sheet and add a photo of the paper one. Send the report to your pupil and they see it in their app, with their mock test results in their Progress so they can see how they're getting on over time.
What happens when a pupil passes?
Mark them as passed and they keep the app for 30 days, so they can still message you, for example about motorway lessons or Pass Plus. They get an automatic congratulations message with your review links, such as Google or Facebook, and you can add a follow-up after 7 days. They're reminded before their account closes, and you can keep it open longer or close it now. A driving school chooses the wording, or lets its instructors write their own.
Can it send my pupils birthday messages?
Yes, if you want it to. Choose Off, Send Automatically, or Ask Me. With Ask Me, you get a notice on the pupil's birthday with Send, Edit & Send or No Thanks. Birthdays show in your notices along with new enquiries, lesson cancellations, accounts closing, car MOT, tax and insurance reminders, a mock test tomorrow and driving test cancel-by dates.
What happens when I decline an enquiry?
You accept or decline straight from the enquiry, and you choose whether declining sends a polite message or deletes the enquiry straight away. In the Control Centre, Pupil App Messages lets you set the wording pupils see on the waiting list, after an enquiry, when declined or when inactive. If you teach in manual and automatic cars, your enquiry form lets pupils choose which they want.
Can I use my own terms and conditions?
Yes. Start from neutral starter terms and change them to suit you. Pupils accept them in the app, and the time they accepted is recorded.
If I delete a pupil, do I lose their payments?
No. Their payments and driving test results are kept for your records.
How long are my records kept?
Finance records are kept for as long as HMRC says business records must be kept, then cleared away automatically. You're warned three months before, so you can download a copy, and you can keep a year for longer if HMRC is checking it. See our
Privacy Policy.
